About & sources

Bundled-up Bernie is seated in increasingly unlikely places.

Date

Brendan Smialowski’s AFP photograph at Joe Biden’s inauguration, January 20, 2021; same-day social-media remixes.

History

AFP photographer Brendan Smialowski captured Sanders sitting with crossed arms and legs at Joe Biden’s inauguration. Vermont teacher Jen Ellis made his mittens from recycled materials and gave them to him; she told CBS News she was astonished to see her craft-room work at the ceremony. Remixes placed the seated senator in paintings, films and other unlikely settings. On January 27, Sanders announced that Chairman Sanders merchandise featuring the photograph had raised $1.8 million in five days for Vermont charities. Getty’s licensing proceeds were separately pledged to Meals on Wheels of America. The fundraiser did not release the photograph or later edits into the public domain.
