History

The joke reverses Scumbag Steve: a setup invites selfish behavior, but Greg does the considerate thing. In the May 2011 Reddit thread Good Guy Greg stays the night, RsonW said he had seen the image on Canvas a month earlier, had not taken the photograph and did not know the man. Readers welcomed a positive meme while debating whether making breakfast with the host’s food really counted as generosity. Nick Lucchesi’s June 15, 2011 Westword gallery called Greg the antidote to Scumbag Steve; an earlier Cheezburger roundup on CBS News described borrowing $5 and returning $10. Know Your Meme dates the Canvas upload to April 26, 2011; that is documented circulation, not proof of the photograph’s origin. The subject and photographer remain unconfirmed here.
