About & sources

Rows of dancing hamsters became an early musical single-serving website.

Date

Deidre LaCarte’s GeoCities site, August 1998; wider email spread in 1999.

History

Deidre LaCarte built the page for her pet Hampton during a website-traffic contest with her sister Melanie and friend Hazel Steenman. It paired repeated rodent GIFs with a sped-up loop of Roger Miller’s Whistle Stop from Disney’s Robin Hood (1973). Copycat pages substituted fish, cows, Cartman and Jesus. In a Chief Marketer trade report, LaCarte called imitation flattering but objected to versions with porn banners or violence: she intended a child-safe, nonviolent page. She repeated that distinction in CBC’s 2018 oral history, recalling copied pages that let visitors kill the hamsters. The Cuban Boys’ Cognoscenti vs. Intelligentsia (1999) and the Boomtang Boys’ The Hampsterdance Song (2000) were separate later recordings. The local captioned image is a later remix, not the musical website.
