About & sources

A promotional photograph becomes a knowingly sheepish reaction.

Date

Late-1990s King of Queens publicity photograph; a September 2023 meme surge followed earlier circulation.

History

Tony Esparza photographed Kevin James as Doug Heffernan for The King of Queens, credited to CBS Photo Archive/Getty Images. The hands-in-pockets shrug became a sheepish reaction to awkward or mischievous situations. In September 2023, @ChampagneAnyone’s “me after 1 double rum and diet” caption helped spark the surge; a later Daily Dot history reports that he had shared the photo in 2020 without the same response. On The Tonight Show in January 2024, James recalled following the photographer’s goofy pose directions and asking him to “bury that one.” James and Jimmy Fallon also recreated the pose in a comedy sketch. The photograph predates its meme fame; retained Getty/CBS watermarks do not establish reuse permission.
