About & sources

A green, long-fingered character finds fascination in rusty spoons, giving early web animation an unsettling, surreal voice.

Date

David Firth (Doki); first episode uploaded to Newgrounds on July 1, 2004.

History

The selected year marks the first episode’s publication, not the later upload of a compilation or a revival. Newgrounds lists Doki as author and July 1, 2004 as the upload date; Know Your Meme identifies the creator as David Firth and documents the series’ surreal horror, absurd comedy and fan tributes. Content note: the series includes disturbing imagery and adult themes. This exhibit uses a non-graphic representative character still, not a playable episode or a complete preservation of the Flash animation, voices and sound. It does not diagnose a real person or invite ridicule of mental illness.
