About & sources

Eduard Khil’s buoyant wordless singing turns an older television performance into a musical internet greeting, remix subject and unexpected link destination.

Date

Eduard Khil’s 1976 performance clip; Know Your Meme reports a November 26, 2009 YouTube upload and wider circulation in early 2010.

History

This exhibit uses 2010 for the online rediscovery documented by contemporary reporting, not the song’s composition or the performance’s recording. Know Your Meme dates RealPapaPit’s upload to November 26, 2009 and describes Reddit and news-site circulation in early 2010. In a March 26, 2010 interview, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty identifies the footage as a 1976 clip and the song as Arkady Ostrovsky’s 1966 composition. Khil describes enjoying a fan parody: “It’s funny. I like it.” His reaction is evidence about that example, not blanket permission for every remix or reuse. The preview is a memorial-edited close-up of Khil against a mustard-colored background, with the added text “Eduard Khil 1934 - 2012.” Those dates label his lifespan, not the meme’s publication. It is not playable preservation of his voice, gestures or the song. Footage and music remain with their rightsholders; private display and attribution do not establish public-reuse permission.
