About & sources

A reality-TV argument is paired with Smudge the cat’s dinner-table stare.

Date

2011 television frame and 2018 cat photograph; paired online in May 2019, broad remix spread in June.

History

Taylor Armstrong is the woman, with Kyle Richards beside her, in a 2011 Real Housewives of Beverly Hills confrontation. Armstrong later told OprahMag she had feared for her safety during the scene, but enjoyed the creative memes after moving on. Smudge’s photograph is separate: owner Miranda Stillabower posted it on Tumblr in 2018 as “he no like vegetals” and told TIME he demands a chair at dinner. TIME identifies @MISSINGEGIRL’s May 1, 2019 tweet as the first known pairing, citing Know Your Meme; Reddit users later added contrasting labels. The images do not depict a real encounter.
