History

Reddit user rken3824 linked a Quickmeme image in Introducing overly manly man on September 24, 2012. A same-day qkme_transcriber bot comment preserved its caption for readers unable to load the image: a colors joke disparaging women and gay people. Reception was mixed from the outset: commenters called it a forced meme, questioned whether one caption made a new meme, and criticized its homophobia and misogyny. Later variants turned the mustached persona toward absurd boasts about steak, toughness and a mustache supposedly present at birth. Brennan Donnelly included it in Erie Reader’s January 2013 review of 2012 memes. The photograph is commonly identified as nineteenth-century boxer Mike Conley; these invented lines are not quotations from him, and its photographer and exact date are not established here. Some historical variants are derogatory; the local selection favors absurd physical boasts.
