About & sources

The mischievous rage-comic grin signals trolling and elaborate bait.

Date

Carlos Ramirez / Whynne’s DeviantArt comic, September 19, 2008.

History

Carlos Ramirez (Whynne) drew the original Trolls comic in MS Paint. He told Kotaku in 2015 that it mocked people who excused bad arguments by claiming they were trolling. After posting it to 4chan’s /v/ board in 2008, he went to sleep and woke to find it reposted in other threads. The grin became a rage-comic shorthand for mischief, beyond that original criticism. Ramirez registered the work with the U.S. Copyright Office in 2010 and licensed commercial uses; circulation did not make it public domain. Cover Yourself in Oil is a later variant, not the 2008 comic.
