About & sources

A familiar pop chorus becomes reusable material for incongruous covers, mashups and lyric substitutions.

Date

Smash Mouth’s 1999 song; selected 2009 marks a documented YouTube parody, not the song’s release or the first ever remix.

History

Know Your Meme documents Richalvarez’s April 16, 2009 YouTube parody “Mario, You’re a Plumber.” That is the selected circulation checkpoint here, not a claim to the earliest parody. The original Smash Mouth single dates to 1999 and also appears in the opening of Shrek (2001), so the source artifact predates this archive’s timeline. Later examples include Neil Cicierega’s 2014 Mouth Sounds mashup album and Jon Sudano’s 2016 videos singing the lyrics over other songs. These examples illustrate different ways a recognizable song can become a reusable structure rather than a single fixed joke. This representative music-video still is not a playable song, a preserved remix, or an audio license. Copyright in the recording, composition and video remains with the respective rights holders; public reuse rights are not established.
