History

This exhibit selects 2006 for YouTube-era circulation, not the creation of Thomas or its television music. Know Your Meme documents wasakwarrior’s December 2, 2006 mashup with In Da Club and BeatBreaker06’s December 17, 2006 mashup with Drop It Like It’s Hot. Its retrospective chronology also identifies a June 7, 2005 YTMND example; that is an attributed earlier example, not an independently established first-ever remix. The format keeps the recognizable theme while changing the vocal track. Some linked source examples contain explicit lyrics. The representative thumbnail pairs half of a human face with half of Thomas’s face on a bright pink background; it is a composite illustration of the mashup idea, not an original television frame or playable preservation of a remix.
