About & sources

Ghanaian dancing pallbearers became an ominous punchline and remix subject.

Date

Source videos uploaded in 2015, 2017 and 2019; Astronomia-paired meme spread in February–March 2020.

History

Benjamin Aidoo leads Ghana’s Nana Otafrija Pallbearing & Waiting Services. He explained that clients choose a solemn service or a choreographed display: the dancing celebrates the deceased and helps mourners smile. Sulley Lansah’s 2017 BBC report documented the work before the 2020 meme. TikTok fail edits cut from impending mishaps to the pallbearers dancing, usually with Astronomia; the first music pairing’s author remains uncertain. During COVID-19 lockdowns, the images also carried stay-home warnings, including billboards in Brazil. The group also spoke through the meme: The World documented stay-home messages and a Colombian police imitation in April 2020. On May 6, BBC News Pidgin reported their own Twitter video thanking doctors worldwide and warning viewers to stay home or dance with them. These were public-health appeals, not merely captions imposed by other users. The real funeral service is not a staged accident punchline. Local artwork and silent animation do not preserve the song or original audiovisual edits.
